BESS (battery storage)

Batteries are arriving in Argentina's power system: they store energy when there is a surplus (at night or at solar noon) and deliver it at demand peaks. Two tenders, AlmaGBA and AlmaSADI, awarded more than 1,400 MW, and the first systems are being built in the AMBA.

713 MWawarded in AlmaGBA (AMBA), more than US$ 540 million
700.5 MWawarded in AlmaSADI (rest of the country), about US$ 700 million
0 MWin commercial operation by August 2026: the first ones come online before summer

What a BESS is and what it is for

  • BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) is a battery system connected to the grid: containers with battery modules (today almost always lithium iron phosphate, LFP), inverters that convert direct current to alternating current, transformers and a control system.
  • It is measured in MW (how much power it can deliver) and MWh (how much energy it stores). A system of 50 MW and 250 MWh can deliver 50 MW for 5 hours.
  • It is used to cover peaks in demand (summer afternoons in the AMBA), relieve congested grids, make use of midday solar energy and stabilize system frequency.
  • Alongside renewable farms, batteries make it possible to deliver energy when there is no sun or wind: it is the combination that many MATER projects are seeking.

What it means for a supplier

  • Each BESS is a complete electrical project: foundations and pads for containers, medium-voltage switchgear, transformers, cabling, SCADA and connection to the substation.
  • Fire safety is critical in lithium batteries: detection, suppression and spacing between containers (see the SLCI categories).
  • Operation and maintenance, container climate control (HVAC) and module replacement are long-term contracts.
