Wind

Wind is the country's main renewable source: 72 farms and 1,249 wind turbines with 4,558 MW (April 2026). The winds of Patagonia and southern Buenos Aires are among the best in the world.

Where and why

  • Patagonia (Chubut, Santa Cruz, Río Negro, Neuquén): the strongest and most constant winds; farms achieve very high capacity factors by international standards. The limit is the 500 kV grid for bringing energy to the center of the country.
  • Southern Buenos Aires (Bahía Blanca, Tornquist, Azul, Olavarría, Necochea): good wind and close to demand. In 2026 the province overtook Patagonia in installed capacity.
  • Córdoba, La Rioja and La Pampa complete the map. In 2025 General Levalle (Córdoba) came online: 25 wind turbines of 6.2 MW, among the largest in the country.
  • Machines have grown: the first RenovAr farms used 2 to 3.6 MW turbines; the new ones, 4 to 6.2 MW, with larger rotors and taller towers. That is why capacity grew 38% since 2022 with 30% more wind turbines.

Prices

The RenovAr tenders brought the price of wind energy down from about US$ 59 per MWh (round 1, 2016) to US$ 41 (round 2, 2017-2018). Today new farms sell their energy to industrial users under private MATER contracts.

What it means for a supplier

  • A wind farm needs roads and assembly pads, large-volume concrete foundations, heavy-lift cranes (more than 100 m lift height), transport of blades over 70 m long, a substation and a line.
  • Operation and maintenance: long-term contracts with manufacturers and local service companies.
